Read Across America Day

Children react as Col. Andrew Roddan, 374th Airlift Wing commander, reads ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ at the Yume Child Development Center in observance of Read Across America Day at Yokota Air Base, Japan, March 2, 2023. The day was established by the National Education Association in 1998 to help get children excited about reading. March 2nd was chosen because it is the birthday of children’s book author Dr. Seuss. The Yokota Library participates in a summer reading program with the Department of Defense Morale Welfare and Recreation to encourage the youth to continue reading throughout summer break. Additionally, the Yokota Library has also supported and provided access for Japan Self-Defense Force members and their families since 2006 and local national employees as part of the library’s local practices for more than 25 years.
