Cope North 23: Trilateral integration at Iwo Jima strengthens capabilities

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Andrew McConkay, 36th Operations Support Squadron airfield manager, holds a Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) steady for Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Senior Airman Aya Mukai, security specialist, as he drops a calibrated weight onto a measuring spike while conducting airfield survey operations during the Cope North 23 exercise, on the remote island of Iwo Jima, Japan, Feb. 21, 2023. The DCP is a tool used to gauge the consistency of the subgrade beneath the pavement surfaces of an airfield, and many measurements help build a picture of how much weight and usage sections of the airfield may be able to bear. Survey teams deploy to verify the status of an existing installation and what it can handle when there’s a demand to move aircraft and equipment to a new area. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt.
