COMPACAF visits U.S. bases in Japan to reinforce readiness, strengthen deterrence May 27, 2025

Gen. Kevin Schneider, Pacific Air Forces commander, visited Misawa and Kadena Air Bases May 19-21, engaging directly with Airmen and reaffirming PACAF’s commitment to forward presence, combat readiness and strategic deterrence in the Indo-Pacific.

“The challenge remains how to effectively manage this complex security dynamic and prevent further tensions from spiraling into conflict, while working to ensure the security, freedom and prosperity for our Allies and partners,” Schneider said. “We succeed at this through the strength of our people, the inherent power of the U.S. joint force, and a growing network of allies and partners.””

Schneider’s trip focused on evaluating PACAF’s force posture, strengthening the command’s operational agility and recognizing the contributions of Airmen at two of the most critical bases in the region.

“Our forward-based posture is not just about proximity,” Schneider said. “We deter with credible, ready forces in the right places, backed by strong command relationships and plenty of training.”

At Kadena’s 18th Wing and tenant units, Schneider observed how Airmen are adapting to dynamic force employment and building resilient, integrated combat capabilities. Discussions focused on posture and operational readiness across the theater.

Additionally, Schneider’s tour extended to the 18th Wing’s joint partners, including the U.S. Army’s 1st Battalion, 1st Air Defense Artillery Regiment and U.S. Marine Corps’ Unmanned Serial Vehicle Squadron 3, showcasing how they contribute to safeguarding Okinawa.

The general visited units across Misawa’s 35th Fighter Wing, emphasizing the importance of PACAF’s partnership with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. He received updates on agile combat employment and operations designed to complicate adversary decision-making. Schneider met with Misawa’s aircraft maintainers, recognizing their efforts to generate airpower while learning how they are preparing to support fifth-generation fighter aircraft.

“Every Airman I met is focused on the mission and ready to execute at a moment’s notice,” Schneider said. “Our ability to effectively deter aggression and project power comes down to the readiness, professionalism and innovation of our people.”

The general’s visit comes as PACAF continues to refine its theater-wide concepts for operations and joint integration to ensure maximum flexibility and responsiveness across the Indo-Pacific. PACAF’s priorities remain focused on preserving peace through deterring adversaries and sharpening warfighting readiness.
